Pottery

I began making pottery in the fall of 2006.

Clay is a material that I don't think I could ever tire from, because it is such
a versatile medium!  It is an ever evolving journey.   I work with stoneware
clay, but hope to soon experiment with local clay - like the clay from Flat
Creek! (on my Dads farm)

I make all of the glazes that I use, in my on-farm pottery workshop.     All
pottery made with the intent of coming in contact with food has been glazed
with glazes that have been leach tested and found to be food safe.  They are
also microwave and dishwasher safe. Occasionally I will use a non-tested
glaze on a piece of non-food pottery, such as a yarn bowl, or a vase.

All of my pottery is either hand thrown on the pottery wheel or hand
sculpted - carved.  Many of the pots include both!  Most recently, I have
been experimenting with sgraffitto, which is a process of painting a slip (or
liquid clay) on the mug and carving it away to reveal a design.  (the b&w
pottery is done using this technique)   The ornaments, and Ewenice mugs are
made by  initially carving the design.  I then make a "push mold" of that
design.  In the case of the ewenice mugs, i will apply the design from the
mold onto the mug using a technique called "slip and score".   Then, the
design will need to be touched up and re-worked due to the "smushing"
process (ok, i made that process up).   The final result is a pot that is
original.  There may be similar pots, but none exactly alike!  (which could be
a downfall if you are looking for  "matchy-matchy")

I
I am excited to share that 2 of my mugs were displayed in
the "What's new, what's now, what's next in knitting"
section of Vogue Knitting 2011 Early Fall issue.  What
an honor!
